History of Ngaraard State

Ngaraard history is as old as the land itself as chronicled by means of its legends and mythologies told throughout the ages from generations to generations. However, the State’s first written history was in the mid-1800’s by a German Anthropologist by the name of Dr. Semplar. The written history tells of the people of Ngaraard and their community, especially the people of Ngebuked County, one of the five villages of Ngaraard.

Ngaraard is traditionally known as “Kerradel” and has some of the most beautifully created scenery from both the west and the east coast, which are connected by a long stone pathway to docks on both shores.

The State is distinguished more from her magnificent legends,… the love story of Tulei & Surech, the young and ailing Rechechem who killed the flying demi-god UCHEL of Ngiwal, Chief NGIRAIRUNG who was summoned by IBEDUL of Koror to rid itself of Aimliik’s notorious warrior brothers Madedengiil and Rechelsuld, the fountain of youth from Ngerchokl Lake and many more that one may come across from her own people or one may get a hold of such legends at the Belau National Museum or the office of the Bureau of Arts and Culture under the Ministry of Community & Cultural Affairs of the government.

Ngaraard has close ties with the people of Angaur and Peleliu states established during World War II. In the middle of the intense war between the United States and Japan in the Pacific, the people of Angaur and Peleliu were located to Ngaraard setting up small villages on the hills.

Throughout the island’s history, people of the land migrated north and south therefore close relationship between clans from Ngaraard and both States were still recognized thus living with the people from down south was easily established.
